Building on the century-long tradition of the Mathematical and Physical Journal for High Schools  (KöMaL), the MATFIN Foundation will launch a new international talent development publication in 2027. The Matphin journal will share Hungary’s successful approach to nurturing scientific talent and fostering a strong competition culture with students worldwide. Hungarian team leaders have already introduced the upcoming journal to participants at the recent International Physics Olympiad in Colombia and the International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai.

Inspired by KöMaL, one of the flagships of Hungary’s science talent development system, Matphin will be an English-language journal designed for an international audience. The journal’s problem sets and in-depth content will provide a high-quality, current knowledge base to support preparation for International Olympiad-level competitions.

The journal will be available in two formats. The online platform will launch its pilot phase in January 2027 and will be updated monthly with new problem sets in mathematics, physics, and computer science. Participants will have one month to submit their solutions through the platform. A dedicated team of experts will evaluate all submissions, providing personalized feedback and allowing students to track their scores online. The most creative and well-presented solutions may even be selected for publication in the journal.

The printed edition will complement the digital platform. Published annually, the inaugural issue will be released before the 2027/2028 school year and first distributed to participants at the international summer Olympiads, including the International Mathematical Olympiad, which returns to Budapest in July 2027 after 45 years. Together, the print and online editions will support students and teachers throughout their preparation.

Three international editorial boards, one for each subject area and each with three members, will ensure the journal’s academic quality.

These boards include internationally recognized experts who leade scientific committees for the International Olympiads and prepare national teams. At the invitation of the MATFIN Foundation, the Editor-in-Chief of Matphin will be mathematician Dávid Kunszenti-Kovács, Senior Research Fellow at the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics. He also leads Norway’s International Mathematical Olympiad team and is a member of the Executive Board of the International Mathematical Olympiad.

The competition series will extend beyond the online platform. To conclude the 2027/2028 academic year, the Foundation will host a season finale in Budapest, where top-performing students can meet one another and compete directly.
