A new era in international talent development: Introducing the Matphin Journal
Building on the century-long tradition of the Mathematical and Physical Journal for High Schools (KöMaL), the MATFIN Foundation will launch a new international talent development publication in 2027. The Matphin journal will share Hungary’s successful approach to nurturing scientific talent and fostering a strong competition culture with students worldwide. Hungarian team leaders have already introduced the upcoming journal to participants at the recent International Physics Olympiad in Colombia and the International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai.

MATFIN Students Shine at This Year’s International Science Olympiads
With the conclusion of the 2025/26 academic year, the international Olympiad season in mathematics, physics and informatics, and has begun, bringing outstanding results for the Hungarian teams. With only two exceptions, all team members prepared for these competitions through MATFIN’s Olympiad School programme. Since the beginning of the academic year, MATFIN Olympians have won two gold, ten silver, and twenty-one bronze medals, as well as three honourable mentions in individual competitions. In team competitions, they have earned one silver and one bronze medal – and the summer is far from over!

MATFIN Trains Nearly All Members of Hungary’s International Olympiad Teams in Mathematics, Physics, and Informatics
The MATFIN Foundation, established on the initiative of 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics laureate Professor Ferenc Krausz, celebrated the end of the first academic year of its extracurricular programme and nationwide Olympiad School with a gala event held on 12 June at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME). MATFIN’s Founder Is Building an International Screening Network for Non-Communicable Diseases
In 2023, MATFIN’s Founder, Professor Ferenc Krausz, together with Pierre Agostini and Anne L’Huillier, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their pioneering experimental methods for generating attosecond pulses of light, enabling scientists to study electron dynamics in matter. The potential of these methods, however, extends far beyond fundamental physics: when applied to molecules in human blood, the resulting measurements may reveal subtle changes that provide early signs of developing health conditions long before symptoms appear.

Four Bronze Medals for Hungary at the 2026 European Physics Olympiad
At the EuPhO held in Gothenburg, Sweden, the Hungarian team, composed of members of the MATFIN Foundation’s Olympiad School, won four bronze medals and one honorable mention.

MATFIN Celebrated the Completion of Its First School Year Programme at BME
The end-of-year event for MATFIN’s extracurricular high school programme and the first graduating class of its Olympiad School was held on 12 June at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME). Approximately 250 students, teachers, and guests attended the event, including Zoltán Váczy, Deputy State Secretary for Legal and Administrative Affairs at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation. Charaf Hassan, Rector of BME, which hosted the ceremony, expressed his delight at welcoming young talents to the university’s ceremonial hall, where several Nobel laureates had previously received their diplomas.

Sándor Róka: The Legendary Educator Who Turns Mathematics into Art
Few Hungarian educators can claim their work is recognized as exemplary by the international mathematical community. We have every reason to be proud of Sándor Róka honored this year with the Paul Erdős Award from the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions (WFNMC). This recognition is more than a trophy on a shelf; it is the highest global distinction for popularizing mathematics, the result of a lifetime of dedicated humble work.
